If you like Cabernet from California, try a Chilean Cab!
Yes, California Cabs are so easy to love —they’re juicy, they’re powerful, and they are so accessible (every wine shop has a plethora of Cali Cab options). As with all things that get popular, prices have also crept up in recent years. If you are looking to expand your horizons but still stay within your comfort zone (and save a few $$ at the same time), then I’d offer up a Cab from Chile.
A Few things to know: Chile is the perfect blend of New and Old world wine styles. Its vineyards have been untouched by phylloxera (a parasite that killed many European wines in the 1850s). Today, Bordeaux varietals (cab, merlot) are commonly grown.
Tasting profile— fruit forward yet earthy; Candied cherries, sweet blackberries, potting soil, menthol, strawberry preserves, olives, bell pepper
Price for a decent bottle: $25 -$30 (one-third of what a decent napa cab will cost you)
Lookout for these Regions: Maipo Valley, Colchagua Valley, Maule Valley
Producers to try: Garage Wine Co, Lazuli
